Double Consciousness

This proposal reimagines the historic Stand Theater in Dorchester, Massachusetts, as a renewed cultural and commercial hub that reflects the complexities of community identity and social equity. Responding to a real 2021 RFP for the building’s redevelopment, the design critiques embedded racial and class biases in the city’s preferred tenant guidelines. The project integrates both approved and prohibited tenant types into a single reorganized volume, addressing these exclusions directly through spatial programming.

Drawing on W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of double consciousness, the design negotiates the tension between external perceptions and lived community experience. Public-facing storefronts line the major street, while community-serving programs are positioned along a more local, interior courtyard. The project transforms a former parking lot into a public courtyard, introduces new entry points, and carves out selective interventions within the existing structure, balancing preservation with adaptation to serve the neighborhood’s evolving needs.
