Barns & Silos
Located on the East Boston waterfront, this greenhouse and community center project was designed to foster environmental and cultural exchange while addressing the neighborhood's food insecurity. In response to multiple site entry points, including neighborhood stairs, park paths, and waterfront docks, the building is organized around a cross-shaped plan that integrates community markets, kitchens, and gathering spaces throughout.
Drawing inspiration from barn and silo typologies, the design reinterprets these familiar rural forms within an urban context. Barn volumes contain primary public programs while silo structures house mechanical systems and lookout spaces. The plan creates four distinct courtyards, each activating a different relationship between the building, the community, and the surrounding landscape. The design balances openness, productivity, and public engagement through a composition of light-filled indoor and outdoor spaces.
